Hair Transplant Surgery

Hair transplantation surgery is the only permanent treatment of hair loss that is currently available. There are a number of advanced hair transplant techniques used to effectively treat baldness, the most popular is known as micro-hair transplantation. This latest hair transplant surgery involves individual hair follicles rather than clumps of hair, which leads to more natural-looking results.

During the micro-hair transplantation procedure (follicular unit transplantation), surgeons extract a number of follicular units from the back of the head. Each unit contains anywhere from one to four hair follicles, oil glands, muscles and connecting tissue. Next, the donor tissue is carefully trimmed under a high powered microscope, which helps produce the maximum number of undamaged follicle units. The more follicle units that are kept intact during the trimming process, the fuller the coverage of the bald areas. Next, the carefully prepared follicles are inserted in the bald areas through a number of small incisions, which heal naturally within seven to ten days.

Hair transplant surgery is typically an outpatient procedure and depending on the number of follicles that are being transferred, the procedure can take several hours. Local anesthesia is administered prior to surgery and most patients experience little or no discomfort.

Hair transplant surgery is an advanced technique, but depending on the level of baldness some patients may need multiple hair transplantation surgeries to achieve a full head of natural-looking hair.

Recovery time following the hair transplant procedure is typically less than two weeks, however, the final results may not be seen for several months. In fact, it takes anywhere from three to five months for the transplanted follicles to begin to grow new hair. At first, the hair will appear very thin and fragile, but becomes healthier as it matures. The hair continues to grow for the rest of the patient's life. Risks associated with hair transplant surgery, include scalp numbness, infection and scarring.

In some cases hair transplant surgery is used in conjunction with other types of hair restoration procedures, including scalp expansion, scalp reduction and/or scalp flaps surgery. Scalp hair restoration procedures are mostly used to assist in minimizing the bald area and/or expanding the hair-bearing areas.

Hair transplantation surgery can be quite time consuming and requires a team of highly skilled and detail-oriented medical surgeons and technicians. Just as with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks. The risks of complications for anesthesia or from infection is no different than with the risks for nose surgery or eyelid lift surgery risks.

Other popular aesthetic surgery procedures among hair transplant patients include facelift, forehead lift, brow lift, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, ear surgery and chin augmentation.
