More About Labiaplasty – Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery

Labiaplasty involves surgically reducing and/or reshaping a female's external genital structure, more specifically the labia minora and/or the labia majora. Labia minora refers to the inner lip of the vagina that forms the clitoral hood. Labia majora is the outer lip of the vagina that protects the labia minora. The group of aesthetic vaginal surgeries includes a number of other vaginal rejuvenation procedures, including hoodectomy, vagina tightening, revirginization, augmentation labiaplasty, laser perineoplasty, vulvar lipoplasty and G-spot amplification. These procedures are often utilized in addition to labiaplasty to further enhance the aesthetics of the vagina and sexual satisfaction.

Patients undergo labiaplasty for a number of personal reasons, including low self-esteem or discomfort.  Many women which to alleviate pain caused by an enlarged or thick labia, which can interfere with a number of daily and/or recreational activities, including biking, hiking, sitting down, working out or wearing tight clothing. Vaginal lip enlargement can be caused by a number of factors, including genetics, childbirth, aging, injury or intercourse.

Labiaplasty is generally an outpatient procedure lasting anywhere from two to four hours. During the procedure, a plastic surgeon makes small incisions along the lips of the vagina and removes excess tissue. In some cases, the surgeon may use a liposuction cannula to further reduce the thickness of the labia majora or a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser to promote new skin growth. The laser may also be used to tighten the vaginal opening, if needed.

Labiaplasty recovery may last several weeks with common surgical side effects, including bruising, swelling, tenderness and some bleeding. Women who undergo labiaplasty will be asked by their surgeon to limit activity and sexual intercourse for at least four weeks. Prescription painkillers and antibiotics are often prescribed to help manage pain and avoid possible infection. Labiaplasty is a complex and serious surgical procedure and is associated with certain risks and complications that each patient should discuss with their plastic surgeon.
